Pros
Social media plays a massive part in our lives and is continually growing as the years go on with new website and apps to communicate with. Social media allows us to keep in contact with friends and family that either live long distant or have a past with form years ago, Facebook is a great example for keeping in contact with people, it has been around since 2004, it allows you to post pictures or write posts about how your feeling or what you've done in the day.
Social media is known to boost self esteem as it "provides a place where teens can freely express themselves." They can join fan pages that are set up for the public. Another known positive is it helps those with disabilities interact at the same level with others. Many of those who suffer with a disability are treated equal to interact with others. "Social media offers an equal opportunity to everyone... This makes them feel that they actually belong and realize that they are not different at all."
Messaging for example, Facebook Messenger, can help plans. Success magazine says that "Social media sites can lead to face to face interactions when plans are made via the sites." It also quotes "Social media provides academic research to a wider audience, allowing people access to previously inaccessible educational resources." This shows that social media can be well used for educational purposes and not just interactions with friends and family.
Social media also benefits great opportunities for business owners and other types of organisations to connect with their customers, sell their products and expand. "There are a lot of entrepreneurs and businesses out there that thrive almost entirely on social networks and wouldn't be able to operate without it."

Cons
There are some consequences that come along with social media like cyber bullying, sexting, etc, but also the fact that our entire lives are surrounded and reliant on social media products. Teen shield quotes ' Many teens spend and average of 8 hours online every day. Much of that is thought to be spent on social media site, with only some attention focused on research and learning.' This clearly highlights nowadays children and teenagers don't really have much of a childhood or spend their time learning academically online and would rather spend their time for hours on social media.
Another effect of social media would be anxiety/depression, teenagers and young adults are the most common age factors to be known to suffer anxiety/depression nowadays and one of the leading causes sometimes towards these would be social media. The BBC quote 'General anxiety provoked by social media, characterised by feelings of restlessness and worry, and trouble sleeping and concentrating... people who report using seven or more social media platforms were more than three times as likely... to have high levels of general anxiety symptoms.' This indicates there are a lot of images on social media like Instagram that shows people with the perfect body, which can have an effect on young people feeling low, anxious but also sometime have consequences, for example, eat disorders, or sometimes committing suicide.
